Every year when the northeast monsoon arrives in Chennai, pest calls go up. Heavy rain changes where pests live, what they eat and how they find shelter, and your home is often the answer. Understanding what changes helps you act before the problem starts.
What the monsoon does to pests
- Flooded nests and burrows. Rain floods ground-level nests, so ants, rats and cockroaches move into buildings looking for dry shelter.
- Standing water. Puddles, blocked drains, flower pots and open tanks become breeding sites for mosquitoes.
- Higher humidity. Damp air and damp wood suit termites and cockroaches, and the first rains often trigger winged termites to swarm.
- Overgrown plots. Vegetation grows fast, and vacant plots and gardens give rats, frogs and snakes cover close to homes, especially in villas and layouts around the edge of the city.
A quick guide by pest
| Pest | Why the monsoon makes it worse | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mosquitoes | Standing water to breed in | Empty and cover water containers, keep drains flowing, consider treatment of breeding sources |
| Rats and mice | Burrows flood, food is scarce outside | Seal gaps around pipes and doors, store food in sealed containers, cover waste |
| Cockroaches | Drains overflow and damp spaces expand | Keep drains covered, fix leaks, clean under sinks and behind appliances |
| Termites | Damp soil and wood, swarming after first rains | Fix leaks, keep wood off the floor, inspect for mud tubes and discarded wings |
| Ants | Nests flood, so colonies relocate indoors | Seal cracks, wipe food spills, treat trails and nests |
| Snakes | Cover and prey move close to homes | Clear debris, trim vegetation, control rats |
Pre-monsoon checklist
- Remove or cover standing water: buckets, pots, tyres, coolers and open tanks.
- Clean gutters and drains so water flows instead of pooling.
- Cover overhead tanks and sumps with tight lids.
- Fix leaks and damp patches, especially around bathrooms, kitchens and roofs.
- Seal gaps around pipes, cables, doors and window frames.
- Store food in sealed containers and keep waste bins covered.
- Trim plants and clear debris that touch walls or pile up near the compound.
- Keep wood and cardboard off the floor and away from walls.
- Check wooden fittings for mud tubes and watch for discarded wings after the first heavy rain.
- Book a treatment before the rains, not in the middle of the problem.
When to call a professional
Call a professional if:
- You see mud tubes, hollow wood or swarming winged insects, which suggest termites
- You hear scratching in the ceiling or find droppings, which suggest rodents
- Mosquitoes are persistent despite removing standing water
- Cockroaches keep returning after DIY sprays
- You are building or own a villa or plot where snakes have been seen
Professional treatment before the monsoon is usually more effective, and often less stressful, than reacting once pests have settled in.
